PRACTICALITIES
EATING OUT
There is a wealth of choice in the surrounding towns. The hotels do the traditional fare to a high and generous standard. Indian, Chinese and Thai cuisines are well represented and there are some excellent restaurants dotted about: The Lemon Tree in Moffat, The Trigony House Hotel near Thornhill and the award winning Linen Room in Dumfries.
FOOD SHOPPING
There is a 24/7 Tesco’s in Dumfries and numerous other supermarkets locally. There is a market every Saturday and Sunday on the Whitesands in Dumfries where fruit and vegetables can be bought cheaply from cheery people. Dalscone Farm just this side of the Dumfries by-pass also sells fruit and vegetables. For high quality meat at very reasonable prices Thornhill takes a lot of beating. We use Rennick’s, on the left after the central roundabout. Barony Country Foods at Parkgate are also good for local game and sea food. And they have a smokery. Watch out too for the local beers and ice cream.
Clothes wise, Dumfries is the home of the Hunter Wellie and the factory shop is on the right 500m after the first traffic lights you cross in Locharbriggs (that is the built up bit before you get to the by-pass). Hoggs of Fife also sell their country clothing here at good prices. |
