GREEN CREDENTIALS

We have done much to reduce our impact on the environment and this has been recognised with a GOLD AWARD from The Green Tourist Business Scheme (GTBS).

Our buildings have been insulated as much as is practicable, the heating and waste systems modernised.  Paper, glass, metal and plastics are all recycled.  The cottages have log stoves and solar panels and we are considering geothermal, wind and other renewable power sources.  The farm is run to maximise the amount of wildlife and species diversity on its pastures … see The Farm.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
We try to minimise the impact on the environment of our activities by reducing, reusing and recycling our purchases, minimising our waste and disposing of it as harmlessly as possible.  We are on a green energy tariff for our electricity, have a green investment portfolio, use some alternative fuels (wood and solar) and have planted trees to offset carbon use.  We also buy locally, choose efficient machinery and avoid harmful chemicals whenever possible.

GOOD PRACTICE
The cottages are insulated, double glazed and heated with an efficient new boiler and solar panels.  The radiators all have thermostats and the heating can be tailored to your needs, so it can be turned off when you are out.  The light switch activator is connected to the door key to stop lights being left on too.

Low energy bulbs and down reflectors are used extensively and the white goods have all been chosen for their efficiency.  The fridge door seal is regularly checked to maximise efficiency.  The toilets either have low volume flush selectors or are fitted with a hippo to reduce water use.  Non drinking water from our pond will be used instead of drinking quality water for toilet flushing in the Poacher's Cottage.  Everyone can also use it for washing dogs, bikes and cars via the tap in the yard.

As Scottish water is “soft” it is nice to drink, kind to kettles and needs much less soap for washing.  Less powder will do the same job.

Phosphate free detergents, Chlorine free cleaners and biodegradable products are all provided.  Use them sparingly and our septic will work well.  There is a tumble dryer in the laundry room, but please use it only in emergency, and pay for the electricity you use.  Clothes hung up in the laundry dry quickly for nothing.  Alternatively you could use the washing line in the garden.

RECORD KEEPING
We monitor our oil, electricity and mains water usage with the aim of increasing the efficiency with which it is used.  Your help and suggestions are appreciated.

RECYCLING
Containers for your paper, cans, bottles and compostable waste are located under the steps up to the Stockman’s Cottage.  Cans should be crushed with the mallet provided.  Non-recyclable waste goes in the grey bins by the entrance to the yard and is uplifted every Wednesday morning (please park considerately, it’s a big truck).  Dog waste should be scooped and tossed into the fromt field with the tools provided, there is no for extra plastic bags.
