NATURE
The crowds rush to the Lakes District and the Highlands every year while the more discerning return to Dumfries & Galloway. The Southern Uplands of Scotland may not be the highest, but they are very beautiful and you do not have to share them nearly as much. And thanks to Scotland's Right to Roam Legislation you can go where you like.
The South facing coast has golden beaches at Sandyhills, coves at Rockliff, a pretty harbour with a tidal island at Kipford and bird rich mud flats at Caerlaverock and Mersehead. Inland there are many rivers, lochs and gorges which run up through pastoral land into desolate hills of black forest, moorland and deer.
The biggest hill near us is Queensberry (697m), the Southern Upland Way passes by on its far side and our own Forest of Ae is full of interest.
A great many pictures of the region can be viewed here. |
